KeywordsSummaryIn two meetings (on February 2 and 9 of this year) of the Scientific Council at the Institute of Literature, the work of Emil Georgiev was discussed - "The Flourishing of Bulgarian Literature in the 9th-10th Centuries". The work of Prof. Emil Georgiev is dedicated to one of the most brilliant periods in the development of Bulgarian medieval literature - the time after baptism and the era of Tsar Simeon, when as a result of the work of Cyril and Methodius, Slavic writing and enlightenment were widely spread and conditions were created for diverse literary activity. The author has directed his efforts towards a more complete and comprehensive study of the problems of Old Bulgarian literature from contemporary Marxist-Leninist positions. According to the reviewer Dimitar Angelov, the author has succeeded to a large extent in connecting the development of Bulgarian literature in the 9th-10th centuries with the overall socio-economic development of Bulgaria. Emil Georgiev considers the creation of Bulgarian literature as a continuous historically conditioned process. The reviewer points out some shortcomings of an ideological, methodological and factual nature. D. Angelov believes that the author has overdone his positive assessment of feudal ideology and has not paid enough attention to the role of the social-heretical movements that developed in the 10th century in Bulgaria. The reviewer lists some moments and points of view in the work that are not sufficiently proven and bear objection. In conclusion, D. Angelov noted that the work of Em. Georgiev is a serious scientific achievement, an undisputed success, and its publication will arouse great interest. The other reviewer Bonyu St. Angelov also gives high marks to the work of Em. Georgiev. The main task of the author is not only to reveal the flowering of Bulgarian literature during its “Golden Age”, but at the same time to show the images of individual writers and to connect the literary process with the socio-political life of the era. According to the reviewer, a characteristic feature of the work is that the author enters into a dispute with many other scholars and defends his point of view with arguments, consistently promotes his concept of the life and work of Cyril and Methodius and emphasizes their influence on the writers who followed them.
