It is well known that not all the works of the rich Byzantine literature have survived; some of them are known only bibliographically, and others only from Latin or Old Church Slavonic copies. As an illustration of this idea, at least as far as Old Church Slavonic literature is concerned, the name of Georgi Skylitsa, a Greek cultural and public figure of the 12th century, is usually mentioned. In addition to his other works, he is also the author of a life of Ivan Rilski, which is now not known in its original Greek version, but only in Slavic.
